On 17 June, the EU Business & Biodiversity Platform and the Finance for Biodiversity Foundation hosted a webinar to launch the 5th edition of the Biodiversity Measurement Approaches Guide as part of the ‘We need to talk about biodiversity’ series delivered in partnership with UNEP FI and UN PRI.

The updated Guide now includes 13 biodiversity measurement tools and metrics, introduces the new metric Biodiversity Intactness Index (BII), features expanded case studies, provides tailored guidance through a three‑step logic for both basic and advanced users, and deep dives into assessing impacts and dependencies on the marine environment.

Expert highlights

  • IPBES Business & Biodiversity Assessment: Nature loss is already creating material financial risks, while capital flows remain misaligned with global biodiversity goals. Data and methods are available and what is needed now is greater uptake and translation into financial decision‑making.
  • State of nature metrics: The near‑final four‑indicator framework of the Nature Positive Initiative’s (NPI) state of nature metrics is designed for integrating state of nature metrics into existing standards and reporting frameworks such as TNFD, GRI, and SBTN. It covers ecosystem extent, ecosystem condition, species extinction risk, and species populations. Final metrics and guidance are expected to be released by Q3 2026. The additional Nature Measurement Protocol is currently in an early scoping phase and will be developed in collaboration between NPI, WBCSD and other organisations.
  • Marine metrics: New work by the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA) closes the gap in ocean‑related measurement, including a consolidated set of 1,600+ marine metrics and case studies. A marine primer will follow in Q3 2026.

Need for coherence

The panel of experts emphasised the need for greater coherence across frameworks, more decision‑useful metrics, and growing attention to marine and freshwater ecosystems. Experts included Vanesa Osuna (UNEP FI), Gavin Edwards (NPI), Petra Mannessen (Rabobank) and Robert-Alexandre Poujade (BNP Paribas AM).
