Breaking news! The EU Ecolabel has reached a new milestone with 1000 certified Tourist Accommodation services across Europe. From hotels and campsites to guesthouses and holiday residences, an increasing number of tourism businesses are choosing the EU Ecolabel to demonstrate their commitment to high environmental standards.
More than a label: businesses committing to the planet
This milestone reflects the growing interest from both tourism providers and travellers in more sustainable tourism options, as highlighted in Booking.com’s yearly report. Indeed, 85% of the survey’s respondents noted that more sustainable travel is very important or important to them. The EU Ecolabel online Tourist Accommodation Catalogue now includes a thousand remarkable hotels, campsites, guesthouses, agritourism establishments, mountain lodges and holiday residences to choose from.
Who said being eco-conscious wasn't fun?
Looking for (sustainable) adventure? You can stay in an EU Ecolabel-certified accommodation that offers “astronaut showers" at Hotel Luise, in Germany, sleep on a treetop at Garden Village, in Slovenia, or visit a 19th-century building turned hotel in the heart of Prague (Hotel Moráň).
The first accommodation was certified in 2003 and currently, the most remote EU Ecolabel-certified tourist accommodation services are located in La Réunion island, in the western Indian Ocean.
Since September 2025, the number of certified stays has grown from 900 to 1000, with accommodation in 16 European countries. This means that every month, an average of 10 new accommodation services joined the scheme! The March 2026 EU Ecolabel facts and figures also point out France and Austria as the current largest pools of greener accommodation providers in the EU.
Good for tourism, better for the environment
Within a tourism market occupied by various – sometimes unreliable labels – the EU Ecolabel “flower” stands out as the only pan-European label that guarantees to consumers across Europe that certified accommodation services comply with strict environmental criteria. They cover areas such as energy use, water management, waste reduction and responsible, local purchasing practices. Thanks to an independent third-party verification process, tourism businesses can demonstrate their environmental performance in a credible and transparent way.
Whether travelling for business or leisure, consumers now have more opportunities than ever to identify accommodation providers that have committed to reducing their environmental impact. Retailers such as Booking.com and lastminute.com allow visitors to search for accommodation with recognised sustainability certifications, such as the EU Ecolabel, helping them make more informed choices when planning trips. The EU Ecolabel being the official environmental label of the European Union, it can be fully trusted by consumers choosing their “green” accommodation for their next travels!
